The Remembrance silence at St Andrew’s was ruined as Birmingham City and Northampton Town supporters traded insults during a rendition of the Last Post.
The minute’s silence is being held across all football matches this weekend to acknowledge Remembrance Sunday.
But while the Last Post was being played during the silence at St Andrew’s on Saturday, Birmingham City supporters became irate after hearing noise from the Northampton Town away section.
Birmingham fans began to shout and swear back at the Northampton supporters, which added to the noise around the ground, while heavy booing from the home crowd began to drown out the bugle player.
One Birmingham City fan wrote on X: ‘I know it was a minority but shame on the Northampton Town fans who sang/jeered during the silence for Remembrance Day – football allegiances aside, ignoring the silence, for the lives sacrificed, is not excusable.
Another Birmingham fan wrote: ‘Never seen anything like that behaviour in a minutes silence from the Northampton Town fans. Absolute cretins, small club brain-dead mentality.’
One Northampton Town supporter told a Birmingham City fan on X after the incident: ‘The people thought it was coming from Birmingham home end but it’s people outside shouting ‘shoe army’ and didn’t know the silence was happening Birmingham wasn’t any better they interrupted anyway all the lads were saying was shush.
‘It’s a big confusion where people outside was chanting not in the ground that made them angry your talking about one per cent.
‘Your fans worse as well you started going during it as well.’
Another Northampton fan added: ‘There was a small group of cobblers fans who were walking outside concourse who started singing so probably weren’t to know. Jeering any sort of silence is disgraceful.’
