CONTAIN MURRAY, RUSH ATTACK

The Jets’ rushing defense has been an issue since last season. The task will be even more difficult this week when Gang Green visits Arizona. The Cardinals are seventh in the league in rushing yards per game (149.7). Also, Arizona is averaging 158.7 yards on the ground during their three-game winning streak. Meanwhile, the Jets are 21st in stopping the run this season (132.6). Gang Green has also struggled with containing quarterbacks in the pocket when they want to run. Kyler Murray is averaging 8.1 yards in his 43 rushing attempts. But he has fumbled five times, so the Jets need to keep their heads on a swivel in case a turnover occurs.

GET OFF TO A FAST START

The Jets have scored just three points on their opening drive in nine games. Being on the road, the Jets and Aaron Rodgers need to attack and get off to an early start. Too often this season, the Jets have had to play from behind, which is not great for a team that has been inconsistent offensively. Jets offensive play-caller Todd Downing needs to be more aggressive on early downs so the team can be in more second and third-down short-yardage situations. Also, being in short-yardage situations will open up the playbook and prevent the Cardinals from keying in on both Garrett Wilson and Davante Adams.

COMMIT TO THE RUN GAME

The Jets have successfully run the football but must be committed to it for 60 minutes. Surprisingly, the Jets rank 30th in rushing yards per game (87.7) this season. One way to keep Rodgers upright is to use Breece Hall and Braelon Allen early in the game. The Jets have the luxury of two running backs who can gain significant yards with their feet and should do so against a Cardinals team that ranks 22nd (132.9) in run defense.
