*Warning: Contains major spoilers for Season 1 of Bad Sisters*
The eagerly-awaited second series of Apple TV’s highly-rated comedy, Bad Sisters, is set to make a comeback tomorrow (November 13), two years after its successful premiere.
With a perfect score of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, Bad Sisters revolves around a murder mystery involving the five Garvey sisters: Eva, Grace, Ursula, Bibi, and Becka. The siblings find themselves under an insurance investigation following the unexpected death of Grace’s abusive husband, and they must figure out who killed him in order to clear their names.
Featuring Sharon Horgan, who also wrote the BAFTA-winning drama, the first series unravelled the mystery in a non-linear style that kept audiences on their toes until the very end.
Even though the killer was revealed in a plot twist at the end of the first season, the sisters will face new secrets in the upcoming season, which introduces several new cast members, reports the Mirror.
For those fans who haven’t caught up with the drama since its debut, we’ve got everything you need to know before diving into season two.
Who murdered John Paul?
Grace (Anne-Marie Duff) was the one who killed her husband John Paul. Given his consistent abuse towards her, she had a clear motive to murder him.
However, her confession came as a surprise as she had mostly defended John Paul’s behaviour throughout the series and it seemed more likely that one of her sisters would have committed the act.
In the final episode, she narrates the events leading up to his death. The couple were alone at their cabin when an argument broke out. John Paul confessed to a sexual encounter with Eva from 10 years ago, alleging that she ‘seduced’ him. Grace confronted him about this supposed encounter and questioned what exactly he did to Eva.
She quickly deduced that he had sexually assaulted Eva, resulting in her infertility. Overcome with anger, Grace strangled her husband to death. After the act, she broke down in tears and screamed: “You f******* monster.”
She then descended the stairs and watched the 1968 film Isadora, which inspired her to stage the murder as an accidental scarf strangulation.
Fast forward to the present day, Matt watches Isadora and realises that John Paul’s crime scene was staged. Aware that Grace killed John Paul, Matt is torn but vows not to inform the police about what transpired.
Where does Season 2 begin?
The second series takes place two years post John Paul’s murder and follows the sisters as they attempt to continue their lives as usual until “past truths resurface.”
The official synopsis states: “Two years after the “accidental death” of Grace’s abusive husband, the close-knit Garvey sisters may have moved on, but when past truths resurface, the ladies are thrust back into the spotlight, suspicions are at an all-time high, lies are told, secrets are revealed and the sisters are forced to work out who they can trust.”
Who makes up the Season 2 cast?
The second season of the show will welcome new cast members alongside its cherished main cast, which includes Horgan, Duff, Eve Hewson, Sarah Greene, and Eva Birthistle. Barry Ward will reprise his role as Detective Fergal Loftus, joined by his keen-eyed assistant, Una Houlihan, portrayed by Sex Education’s Thaddea Graham.
Owen McDonnell is also set to join the cast as Grace’s new romantic interest, Ian Reilly, with the series kicking off as the couple gear up for their wedding.
