MERCER COUNTY, W.Va. – Furever Fixed, the long anticipated low cost spay and neuter clinic in Mercer County recently opened and now those involved say the clinic is already off to a good start in reducing the stray animal population.
Mercer County Commissioner Gene Buckner represents the county on the clinic‘s board. Buckner said during Tuesday’s commission meeting that several animals at the Mercer County Animal Shelter have been spayed and neutered as well as several cats from community members.
Buckner says he was told by the West Virginia Secretary of Agriculture, Kent Leonhardt that for every animal that is spayed or neutered, they’re saving three animals from being euthanized.
“I told him and he gave me his thoughts. It‘s going to take about two years before we really start seeing a decline because there’s just so many strays out there. It’s going to take a while to get them down,” said Buckner.
Buckner says there was a misunderstanding over raising the prices for animals but says the price will remain the same for now. Prices for cats is $100 and dogs start out at around $150.
