Beyond the Gates, a new soap opera made by CBS, has entered production.

Unfortunately for UK soap fans, this one will air in the US.

The drama, which will follow a number of wealthy families living in a gated community, will arrive on the network in February 2025.

It will sit alongside long-running The Bold and the Beautiful and The Young and The Restless, and is the first show of its kind to focus on a Black family in 35 years.

Beyond the Gates, originally known as just The Gates, will be set in a leafy, affluent Maryland suburb of Washington, D.C.

The show centers on the African-American Dupree family, a ‘powerful and prestigious multi-generational family that is the very definition of Black royalty.’

We’ll also meet their neighbours – the Hamiltons, Richardsons and Thomases. Characters include a leading plastic surgeon, a congressman and a millionaire photographer who inherited his parents’ fortune when they died in a plane crash.

CBS have also promised that beyond the set walls, ‘juicy secrets and scandals are waiting to be uncovered.’

Consider us intrigued!

It will also be the first new soap to launch in the States since Passions, which aired on NBC and The 101 Network between 1999 and 2008.

Produced by P&G Studio, which previously worked on Guiding Light and As The World Turns – the upcoming serial has been created soap opera legend Michele Val Jean, who will also serve as show runner.

It is set to debut in the slot once occupied by The Talk, CBS’ local version of Loose Women which will end next month after 14 years.

It’s currently unknown if the new soap will find a UK broadcaster though if history has taught us anything it’s incredibly unlikely. Only Australian soaps Neighbours and Home and Away have managed to take off with Brits during the last 40 years.

The news, however, is a positive sign for the future of soap, in the week that Doctors’ final ever episode airs on BBC One.

After being axed by the broadcaster last year, the staff at The Mill Health Centre will bow out tomorrow and be followed by a behind-the-scenes farewell special.

The genre was for the longest of time considered to be the bread and butter of British TV, though has been in serious decline in recent years. Channel 4 soap Hollyoaks recently relaunched with a reduced three-episode output as part of a new multi-year deal with producers Lime Pictures.
