BLUEFIELD, W.Va. – The City of Bluefield was selected to receive $250,000 to help establish a sidewalk that will stretch half a mile on Cumberland Road.
The funding was announced by West Virginia Governor Jim Justice and is given by the West Virginia Division of Highways as part of transportation alternative grants. The funding for Bluefield will be used to design a plan to put in a sidewalk that would run along Bluefield High School and Bluefield Primary School.
City leaders say the funding is much needed as they continue to try and make the city easier to travel in for not only motorists but pedestrians as well.
“This is the design phase, we’re hoping that it will be not too long. I think typically design phases usually are around nine months so I imagine that’s kind of what we’re looking at for the design. Once we get there we can start looking for funding for implementation,” said GIS specialist, Trenton Burnette.
As part of the grants given out, the Town of Athens also received $300,000 to construct more than 950 feet of sidewalk on East Broadway and Burch Streets.
