A dentist has revealed an unexpected culprit that could potentially be behind weight gain that also impacts oral health.

According to Dr Andrej Bozic, an oral surgeon at Dentum, issues like gum disease and harmful bacteria in the mouth can have far-reaching effects beyond dental woes, potentially impacting gut health, metabolism, and even food cravings.

He cautioned: “Poor oral hygiene can create a cascade of problems that affect your entire body, including your metabolism and weight”.

Here are the ways in which bad oral health can affect your stomach and lead to piling on the pounds.

The link between gum disease and gut health is particularly concerning; periodontal disease is a chronic inflammatory condition triggered by harmful bacteria.

Dr Bozic explained: “When your gums are infected, the bacteria don’t stay localised – they can enter your bloodstream and spread inflammation throughout the body”.

This widespread inflammation may lead to insulin resistance and metabolic imbalances, both associated with weight gain. He added: “When inflammation becomes systemic, it affects how your body processes glucose, leading to higher blood sugar levels and increased fat storage.”

So it seems the importance of good oral hygiene is not just for a healthy smile but also for maintaining a healthy weight.

Bad bacteria and the gut microbiome

The bad bacteria from gum disease can disrupt the gut microbiome, a crucial player in digestion and immune system function.

Dr Bozic has highlighted the link between oral health and weight gain, stating that: “Oral bacteria can upset the balance of good and bad bacteria in your gut, which may lead to digestive issues and inflammation in the gut itself.”

This imbalance can increase cravings for high-calorie, sugary foods and make it harder to feel satisfied after eating, potentially leading to overeating.

How good oral health can help with weight management

Poor oral health can also influence our food choices. Dr Bozic explained: “When you have dental pain or sensitive gums, you’re more likely to avoid crunchy, fibrous foods like vegetables and whole grains, which are key for weight management”.

Instead, those with poor oral health might choose softer, processed foods that are easier to chew but often high in sugar and calories. Improving oral hygiene can indirectly help manage weight by supporting a healthier gut and reducing chronic inflammation.

He added: “Brushing, flossing, and regular dental cleanings are the foundation.” He also recommended adding anti-inflammatory foods like leafy greens, berries, and omega-3-rich fish to your diet to help reduce inflammation in both your gums and gut.

So, before you consider skipping your nightly brushing routine, remember that maintaining good oral health isn’t just about preserving your smile – it could also help you keep off those extra pounds.
