Tesco has unveiled its own campaign for Christmas this year that is tugging at heartstrings, as shoppers say they are “sobbing.”
Officially dubbed “Helping #feedyourChristmasspirit”, the supermarket’s poignant campaign was officially launched yesterday (November 13). The sweet tale focuses on reliving tradition and nostalgia during the holidays.
The three-minute clip tells the heart-warming story of a young man named Gary who is on a mission to rekindle a Christmas tradition of building a gingerbread house, something used to do with his grandmother during the festive season.
After visiting his Grandfather after work one day, he is gifted a box of Tesco’s Mini Gingerbread Men Biscuits. After one bite, the world around him begins to explode into gingerbread baked goods.
This year’s advert’s is set to ‘On Melancholy Hill’ by Gorillaz. The song, which featured on the Great British Bake Off in November, has been lauded by audiences who say that it “fits perfectly” with the emotional story.
After enjoying a Christmas banquet with his friends, courtesy of the supermarket’s Christmas food range, he heads back to his Grandfather’s place to build a gingerbread house after being reminded of all the times he did so with his Grandmother.
Tesco’s Christmas advert has certainly hit the spot with viewers, with many taken to the supermarket’s social media to applaud its “nostalgic” tale that has certainly not left a dry eye in its wake.
One shopper said: “Well done Tesco sobbing on Tuesday 11am.”
A second shopper agreed: “I think this may be my new favourite Christmas advert ever! I’m not crying you are.”
Speaking of the soundtrack, one shopper said: “Thx for Gorillaz!! Fits perfectly.”

Tesco’s “Helping #feedyourChristmasSpirit” can be seen in cinemas in the run up to the big day, with its final air date being December 2023. It can also be viewed in full on Youtube here.
Following the theme of gingerbread, Tesco has also confirmed that it will be donating 10p from sales across a wide range of gingerbread products to help fight food hunger. Proceeds will go towards its partner charities – Trussell and FareShare.
John Lewis has also entered the Christmas advert race, with the retailer’s highly anticipated campaign launched in the early hours this morning (November 14). Similar to Tesco, John Lewis’ advert focuses on family, with two siblings at the centre of the tear-jerking tale.
Titled “The Gifting Hour”, John Lewis’ clip focuses on Sally who is in a last minute dash to John Lewis for the perfect gift for her sister. The advert marks the first time an original song has been used as the soundtrack, as well as featuring a John Lewis store.
