Wetherspoon is known for its affordable food and drink offerings, from its weekly steak club deals to a ramen dish that’s been compared favourably to Wagamama.
Their breakfast menu is particularly popular, featuring everything from the traditional full English fry-up to American-style pancakes and vegan choices, all presented on their distinctive blue and white plates.
Regulars might not be surprised to learn that many of Wetherspoon’s dishes are prepared using microwaves, fryers, or grills rather than being made fresh to order. However, patrons were recently left scratching their heads over the preparation method of a common breakfast item.
A TikTok video posted by user @dobbysc00chie in 2022 unveiled the mystery behind Wetherspoon’s impeccably shaped poached eggs, reports the Express.
The former employee disclosed that the eggs are actually pre-poached and stored until needed, rather than being freshly cooked for each order. In the video, they wrote: “Explaining to a customer that they can’t have poached eggs as they’re pre-poached and are out of stock.
“I actually never told customers they were pre-poached, I just flat out said no, or offered fried eggs instead.”
This insight into Wetherspoon’s kitchen practices sparked a wave of comments, with one asking: “”Pre poached”?? I have so many questions not sure if I actually want answers though.”
Another commented: “HOW DO YOU PREPOACH AN EGG?! while a third said: “How tf do u get pre poached eggs.”
“This explains a lot,” said one user. “I was SO confused when I was told they had no poached eggs and would I like fried?” A fifth said: “I just say the poacher is broken and they just agree.”
An individual who has worked at Wetherspoon described this scenario as “the highlight of working a spoons breakfast shift”. And one said: “Tbf I think a lot more places do this than ppl realise.”
