Cambuslang Rugby Club’s under-15 boys were shining stars as they made history by playing the first ever floodlit match at Coats Park.

It was a successful event in more ways than one, as the junior side ran out 43-15 winners in a friendly against a strong GHK side.

The historic match started a great few days for the blossoming junior section at Cambuslang, with two of their teams making it to national cup semi-finals.

Cambuslang’s under-18 combined side with Cartha Queen’s Park booked their place in the last four of the National Bowl with a 47-33 win over Boroughmuir, and they will travel to Orkney on December 1 to bid for a place in the final.

Their under-16s then won a nerve-shredding contest against Dumfries Saints at Coats Park, edging it 34-33 to make the National Bowl semi-finals, where they will face Boroughmuir on December 1.

Secretary Logan Taylor said: “The cup successes and use of the new floodlights reflected the tremendous progress made over the years in building up the club’s junior section.

“Almost every week, hundreds of young boys and girls from the age of four to 17 can be seen training, playing games … or being given a grounding in the fun of playing rugby.”

Their U14 and U16 boys’ teams remain unbeaten so far in their leagues, and the U15 boys have also started their league strongly, currently sitting second in the table.

Cambuslang’s girls’ section is also growing stronger by the week, with more than 70 players donning the club jerseys on a regular basis.

Their U16s currently sit second in the league behind Biggar Blacks.

Junior Convenor Stewart Barnett is justifiably proud of the achievements of the Junior players and support staff.

He said: “I am delighted with all the junior section developments and achievements at the club and across the wider community.

“With around 350 players, supported by about 50 volunteer coaches and an immensely hard-working committee, we have continued to create a wonderful environment for youth rugby to prosper and thrive within the local community of Cambuslang and beyond.

“I’m also very proud to see the continued growth of women’s rugby at our club. From a standing start three years ago, we now support the development of around 70 girls across our U14 and U16 to 18 teams.

“This is a real testament to the hard work and dedication put in by the entire backroom and support team in the club.”
