We have just two weeks until December finally arrives, which means there will be a mad dash to get in all the Christmas must-haves next month.
One of the big things to tick off your list will be getting in all the essentials for your festive feast. With the holidays already being a costly affair, it’s always worth knowing where you can save some pennies.
A new study from BravoVoucher found that, out of eight leading supermarkets, Aldi is offering the cheapest prices. It comes just after the budget supermarket chain was crowned the cheapest supermarket for October in the monthly Which? price comparison.
The study considered the total cost of 16 festive dinner essentials including a medium turkey crown, pigs in blankets, Yorkshire puddings, seasonal vegetables, condiments, and a Christmas pudding.
Aldi took the crown with a £32.45 price-tag, with the budget supermarket offering the cheapest medium frozen turkey crown at £16.49, a joint win with Lidl. Meanwhile, both 12 frozen pigs in blankets and a Christmas pudding cost just £1.99 each.
Rival Lidl was hot on its heels, with a total of £32.61 – making it a small 7p difference between the two German grocers. The reason it ended up being more expensive was the price of swede costing 62p compared to Aldi’s 42p.
On the other end of the scale, M&S was crowned as the most expensive option with a total of £54.35 – making it 67 percent and almost £22 more expensive than Aldi for the exact same basket of Christmas items.
A medium frozen turkey was found to cost £25, with 12 frozen pigs in blankets costing £4.25, and a Christmas pudding priced at £4.00. It was also the most expensive supermarket for cauliflower cheese that was priced at £4.50.
Speaking on the findings, Marco Farnararo CEO and Co-Founder at BravoVoucher, said: “With inflation impacting food prices, many households are feeling the squeeze. A traditional Christmas dinner is something people cherish and may prioritise, but rising costs can make it harder to afford.
“By comparing prices, people can make more informed decisions, potentially stretching their budgets in order to prepare a festive meal without overspending.
“When a supermarket is seen as offering the “cheapest Christmas dinner,” it can significantly improve its public image. For instance, discount chains like Aldi and Lidl have built reputations for affordability, and a low-cost Christmas dinner reinforces that perception.
“Meanwhile, premium retailers like Marks & Spencer may focus on promoting quality rather than the lowest price, showing how different brands prioritise either value or quality in their marketing.”
