Big Brother fans have accused ITV of ‘messing up’ after the broadcaster issued a major update over the future of the show.

Prior to the current series’ live finale, the network confirmed that a new season will premiere in the new year, marking the third series on ITV since its revival in 2023, over two decades after its initial run on Channel 4.

Prospective housemates can already submit their applications, and those who think they have what it takes to participate in the original social experiment are encouraged to apply online.

ITV’s official X account stated: “It’s official! ! Big Brother will return for a third series on ITV2 and ITVX… following Series 2 of the star-studded edition, Celebrity Big Brother on ITV1 and ITVX next year!”

Fans swiftly responded to the news on social media, with many sharing similar sentiments. A common complaint is that the current six-week series is too brief, particularly considering the number of housemates involved, reports the Mirror.

Viewers have also made other requests, including the reinstatement of a consistent 24/7 live stream. One fan replied to the announcement, saying: “12 housemates, 8 weeks. That’s all we need. It’s not that hard to mess up, yet you seem to be messing it up perfectly”.

Another viewer suggested: “8 Week Series MINIMUM 24/7 Live Feed You want the ‘original social experiment’ and for the past two years have treated it with disdain.”

Another viewer concurred, suggesting that extending the show’s duration could boost its popularity: “Please 8 weeks 6 isn’t long enough and interviews on main show and then different host for BBLL and 24/7 live feed and viewing numbers will go UP.”

One fan expressed a desire for ITV to pay more homage to the series’ history, including the versions aired on Channels 4 and 5. They proposed: “Bring back at LEAST 8 weeks per series, start it in August and run it til I’m a celeb starts. And more panellist’s on Late and Live from Channel 4 and Channel 5 big brother. Remember the history of the show, the reason we all love it.”

Big Brother concludes tonight at 9pm on ITV2 and ITVX.
