JACKSON, N.J. (News 12 New Jersey) – The tallest roller coaster in the world has seen its final launch.
The record-breaking Kingda Ka roller coaster at Six Flags Great Adventure in New Jersey has been retired and will make way for new rides.
Enthusiasts of the iconic Kingda Ka said their final farewells this week.
Matthew Kaiser with American Coaster Enthusiasts rode Kingda Ka for the last time on Sunday.
“We met up with a couple people who even flew in just to ride Kingda Ka,” Kaiser said.
The 456-foot-tall roller coaster closed on Sunday. It opened in May of 2005.
It is the tallest roller coaster in the world and launches riders at 128 mph.
“It was the most intense launch I’ve ever felt, and it still is,” Kaiser said.
Six Flags confirmed the Kingda Ka closure at the park, as well as the closures of the Green Lantern, Twister, Parachute Drop, and the Sky Way to make way for new rides as part of a $1 billion investment in its parks.
Six Flags Great Adventure said next year, a boomerang-type ride called The Flash Vertical Velocity will open, followed by what they call a “multi-world-record-breaking launch roller coaster” in 2026.
