As Outlander season 7 returns for a dramatic second instalment, it appears one couple might be in for a tough time.
Bosses of the Starz show, which will air season 7b later this month, have teased a “vengeful” threat awaiting fan favourite character Young Ian (John Bell) and his wife Rachel (Izzy Meikle-Small).
Giving a new insight into what the show has in store for fans, Outlander’s cast and producers spoke to TV Insider about the turbulent episodes ahead.
Lead actress Caitriona Balfe, who portrays Claire Fraser in the show based on Diana Gabaldon’s epic fantasy book series, has confirmed her character will be “in peril”.
However, Claire is not the only person at risk, as it seems Rachel’s life is also at stake this season.
David Berry, who plays old friend Lord John Grey, has explained that in the second half of Season 7, he has “a very pragmatic agenda, which is to safeguard the Frasers”.
Ever-loyal, Claire agrees, and is accompanied by Ian, whose sweetheart is back in the Colonies – and in the sights of the “vengeful” Arch Bug (Hugh Ross).
The bitter character has vowed to get back at Ian for mistakenly killing his wife – could he be after an eye for an eye.
According to Executive Producer Maril Davis, that threat “is one of the reasons Ian has kept himself from opening his heart to Rachel”.
However, she went on to promise: “We’re going to see what happens to our two young lovers.”
It comes after Davis promised fans an emotional rollercoaster lies ahead, as she spoke about the new episodes at the Paley Center for Media last week.
She said: “I mean this is such a rollercoaster. [Season] 7b is such a rollercoaster. I always say this every season – I feel like I say, ‘Buckle your seatbelts.’
“But this one in particular is an emotional rollercoaster, so I think people should prepare to be, kind of… wrung out.”
While the second part of Outlander season 7 will air this year, its eighth and final season is expected to make its debut in late 2025.
Following the closure of Lionsgate+ in the UK, new episodes of Outlander will be available on Starz and to stream on Prime Video channel MGM+ from Sunday, November 22. You must be an Amazon Prime member before you can sign up for MGM+.
