Passengers aboard a Scandinavian Airlines flight screamed in fear as the plane encountered extreme turbulence – and ultimately made a U-turn back to Europe.

The terrifying episode happened aboard SAS flight SK957, which departed Stockholm on Thursday for Miami. The turbulence struck as the aircraft crossed over Greenland.

A 20-second clip from inside the plane starts with passengers screaming as the person recording the video turns the camera to the right to show people distressed as items go flying.

In the aisle, other objects are seen falling into an aisle.

‘Everybody alright?’ a man can be heard saying.

It ends as the camera shakes and passengers scream again.

The passenger who posted the footage remarked on a woman who was thrown up from her seat: ‘Look at her feet touching the (ceiling)! … I thought we were going to (die).’

Among the items scattered on the floor of the plane were bags and plastic cups.

After the incident, the plane landed at the airline’s base in Copenhagen to be checked for technical issues.

Scandinavian Airlines stated that 254 passengers and one baby were on the flight and that there were no serious injuries.

But a passenger told the Daily Mail that they saw a person get hurt.

The airline stated the passengers were put in hotels and on another flight to Miami on Friday.

It is the second forced diversion for a Scandinavian Airlines flight within less than two months.

In late September, a flight from Oslo to Malaga made an emergency landing at Copenhagen Airport after a passenger opened their in-flight meal and was shocked by a mouse that jumped out of it. It was not known if the rodent was seen again during the rest of trip. The passengers were flown on a different aircraft to their original destination in Spain.
