A pub has its own ‘dictator’ beer range with names like Kim Jong Ale and Putin’s Porter.
The Coach & Horses in Billinghay, Lincolnshire is run by Catherine Mitchell, 37, while her husband Luke, 36, heads up Mitchell Brewing Co that supplies the beer.
Luke made his first foray into brewing three years ago and started giving his beverages ‘fun’ names the following year.
One of the biggest hits at the pub has been the dictator range featuring Kim Jong Ale, Putin’s Porter, Orange Mussolini and, its best seller, Osama Bin Lager.
The Coach & Horses also stocks a rather lewd sounding range – with names like Berried In Cider, A Nice Pear In Cider, Hop In Cider Sloe and SexuALE.
‘The Dictator Range is the one that attracts people – that was supposed to end last year but it’s proved so popular so we’ve kept it going,’ Luke said.
‘If we can use controversial names to help and build the brewery higher then great.
‘Truthfully everyone who tries our beer seems to like it.
‘Osama Bin Lager has been the best seller – but Kim Jong Ale was the first we did.’
Asked if they’ve had any complaints, Catherine said one customer has had anything bad to say about the names.
The individual posted a TikTok video criticising them, which has since been deleted.
Luke said: ‘I heard about it and to be fair she handled it quite well and she just said it wasn’t for her.’
Catherine added: ‘There’s literally just been the one person who didn’t like the names since we introduced them a couple of years ago.
‘They’ve gone down a treat with everyone else. They make people smile and are a real conversation starter.’
Many of the staff have had a hand in naming the beers and ciders and Luke and Catherine also enjoy hearing ideas from visitors to the pub.
‘There are bragging rights if you get yours chosen,’ she joked.
Catherine said they’re not on a mission offend anyone.
‘We just want to make people laugh.’
She added: ‘We don’t actually sell any other beer and cider brands apart from Guinness and it hasn’t put customers off visiting, so we must be doing something right.’
