Scotland’s “best castle hotels” have been named in a new roundup.

With winter just around the corner, there has never been a better time to book a cosy staycation in the Scottish countryside. While the festive season is a special time of the year, it can be good to get away from the hustle and bustle for a day or two.

On Thursday, The Telegraph published a list of Scotland’s top castle hotels. The list includes five hotels all over the country, from Midlothian to the Highlands.

One of the hotels singled out by The Telegraph is Inverlochy Castle Hotel near Fort William. Nestled amidst some of the most spectacular scenery in the Scottish Highlands, the hotel is set within a historic castle dating back to the 19th century.

Inverlochy Castle features a range of opulent rooms and suites, as well as self-contained accommodation. All of the rooms include amenities such as flat screen televisions disguised as mirrors, free Wi-Fi, robes and slippers, and a personal safe.

Meanwhile, the hotel also features the luxurious Seasgair restaurant that serves up everything from evening meals to afternoon tea. The highlight is a dining experience overseen by two Michelin star chef Michel Roux Jr, where guests will be “transported back to the true essence of Inverlochy Castle, to experience it how guests would have when the Castle was a private home”.

The Telegraph wrote: “Queen Victoria said she ‘never saw a lovelier or more romantic spot’ than Inverlochy Castle in 1873, and it remains as impressive as ever. There are no bows to passing fashions here.

“Moving with the times means waterfall showers, Bang & Olufsen stereos and televisions, while the unashamedly country house style – all swags, gilt, silk and brocade, sparkling crystal, polished wood and an all-pervading sense of time suspended – remains.”

Elsewhere, another hotel included on the newspaper’s roundup is Glenapp Castle in Ayrshire. The five-star hotel, set within a Scots Baronial castle dating back to the 19th century, was praised for its “extensive gardens” and “fine dining”.

Glenapp Castle is situated in more than 35 acres of grounds and woodland near the charming coastal village of Ballantrae. The hotel is home to 17 individually designed guest suites, most of which offer views out to the sea.

Meanwhile, Glenapp Castle’s three AA rosette restaurant looks out over the Mull of Kintyre towards the Ayrshire coastline. Visitors can enjoy either three or seven courses, while afternoon tea is also available.
