Many of us will be experiencing condensation building up on our windows as the weather gets colder.
According to EnviroVent, a ventilation company, condensation happens when warm air meets cold surfaces or when there’s too much humidity in your home.
They explain: “When this moisture-packed warm air comes into contact with a chilly surface, it cools down quickly and releases the water, which turns into liquid droplets on the cold surface.”

When condensation forms on a porous surface like a plaster wall or wood, the water soaks in and creates damp patches. This can cause plaster to crumble, wood to rot, and paint and wallpaper to peel away, creating an environment where mould and household pests thrive.
As mould grows, it releases spores into the air, which can be inhaled and irritate airways. Breathing in mould spores can cause headaches, breathlessness, and harm those with weaker immune systems, such as the elderly and young children.
To prevent this, homeware retailer Wilko partnered with cleaning influencer Lyndsay – known as @norfolkavenue on Instagram – to share a three-step method to stop condensation on their Instagram page.
Step one involved cleaning windows with washing-up liquid and water using a sponge. Meanwhile, for step two, Lyndsay used a window vac to dry them with “minimal effort”.
Lyndsay then used a dehumidifier to extract moisture from the air, completing the third step of the process. At the end of the video, she gave a thumbs up, indicating that her condensation hacks were effective.
