Avride plans to have hundreds of delivery robots operating with Uber Eats next year.

AUSTIN, Texas — If you live Downtown Austin and order Uber Eats, you may have the option now to get your food delivered by robot.

Austin-based Avride is teaming up with Uber to bring robotic food delivery to certain restaurants.

The service was rolled out earlier this week. Austin was the first city in the country to get it.

Avride plans to have hundreds of delivery robots operating with Uber Eats next year.

The company already operates in the Mueller area. The downtown delivery robots will operate in the area from Cesar Chavez Street north to 15th Street, and from Interstate 35 west to West Avenue.

Austin customers who request a delivery from participating restaurants on the Uber Eats app will see a notice that says, “Autonomous vehicles may deliver your order.” Before a robot is dispatched, the customer is given the option to decline and have the order delivered by a person instead.

Avride said any tips added to the order will not be charged.

Company leaders hope to soon bring the same service to Dallas and Jersey City, New Jersey.
