Staff at Gretna Green Ltd, customer and local residents, welcomed Paddy McGuinness to the historic Old Toll Bar – known as the first and last house in Scotland – on Day 3 of his 300-mile charity ride for BBC’s Children in Need.
Crossing the border and arriving in Dumfries and Galloway to the sound of bagpipes and a gathering of enthusiastic supporters, Paddy was greeted with cheers.
During a live BBC2 broadcast from the Old Toll Bar, Sir Tom Hunter of the Hunter Foundation announced an extraordinary pledge to match donations up to £2 million – increasing it later to £3 million – bringing Paddy to tears.
After sharing this inspiring news with the crowd, he joined the Gretna Green team and supporters for photos and warm exchanges.
John Holliday, chairman of Gretna Green Ltd, said: “This visit highlighted both Mr McGuinness’s unwavering commitment and the enduring charitable spirit that unites us all. We wish him continued strength as he completes this inspirational journey.”
