Manchester United have been hit with a reminder of their transfer misstep that allowed Scott McTominay to leave for Napoli.
While the Premier League giants are attempting to look to the future with new boss Ruben Amorim undergoing his glitzy unveiling and getting his feet under the desk at Old Trafford, the Red Devils have been provided a timely dose of reality before they get too carried away. Scotland international McTominay was sacrificed as part of Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s major overhaul at Old Trafford after taking over the reins at the club.
But he has proven there is life after United following an end to his 22 years with the club after his £25million move to Naples – quickly earning hero status in Serie A and playing a key part in helping the club to the top of the table. Gutted Erik Ten Hag rued the hardline Financial Fair Play rules that forced the sale before he was axed – while Sir Alex Ferguson also warned against the departure.
Legend Beppe Bruscolotti – who helped bring the Scudetto to Naples for the first in 1987 admits he is still baffled about the deal, while also praising the performances of international teammate Billy Gilmour. He told Corriere dello Sport: “Gilmour and McTominay are living up to expectations.
“They are tough and perfectly fit Napoli’s playing style with their qualities. McTominay, in particular, was a great coup. He is tactically intelligent and physically structured and scores goals with his dangerous late runs. He truly is a great player.”
