A 3-year-old boy and a 26-year-old man were found dead in a home in Missouri after a Sunday night standoff with police, authorities said.
Brett Yager and the unidentified child were found inside a home in Lawson, Mo., around 9 p.m., local CBS affiliate KCTV reported. A woman who was also inside the home was found safe.
Cops responded to the residence about 35 miles northeast of Kansas City around 7:30 p.m. for a domestic violence report, Missouri State Highway Patrol said in a press release.
Police said when the officers arrived at the residence and contacted Yager, he pulled a gun and opened fire on them, according to local ABC affiliate KMBC. The cops returned fire, retreated and called for backup.
As authorities surrounded the home, additional gunfire was heard and investigators learned a child inside may have been used as a hostage, state police said. Officers entered the home just after 9 p.m. and found Yager and the 3-year-old boy dead.
The wounded officer, identified only as a Ray County sheriff’s deputy, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was released from the hospital by Monday morning, KCTV reported.
Missouri State Highway Patrol will investigate the incident.
