A Long Island man has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for beating, strangling and raping his estranged wife nearly two years ago, prosecutors said Monday.
The 48-year-old Farmingville, N.Y. resident, whose name has not been released to protect the victim’s identity, pleaded guilty earlier this year to 23 counts — including rape, strangulation and assault — in the violent attack on the mother of his two children.
Prosecutors say the defendant and the victim were going through a divorce while living in separate areas of their marital home. On Nov. 13, 2022, at approximately 6 a.m., the man broke a bathroom door and began attacking the victim, “dragging her from the bathroom into his bedroom, and then strangled her until she lost consciousness.”
She woke up to find him beating and violently sexually assaulting her, officials said. She tried to escape but the man went after her, once again beating the victim and choking her until she became unconscious.
After approximately three hours of relentless beating, the man forced her to shower and hid her cellphone to prevent her from calling 911.
He also wrote apology notes to their two children, who weren’t at home at the time, and left the letters on their beds.
After he fled, the victim was able to find a phone and call police for help. The man was located shortly after in Sagaponack, on the East End of Long Island, while the victim was transported to a nearby hospital.
“This survivor showed tremendous courage in coming forward to hold the defendant accountable for his vile acts,” Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney said in a news release.
On Monday, Acting Supreme Court Justice Karen M. Wilutis sentenced the defendent to 18 years in prison followed by 18 years of post-release supervision.
