COLUMBUS COUNTY, N.C. (WECT/Gray News) – A teenager in southeastern North Carolina was hit in the face with an ax while trying to stop a fight between a man and his stepmother.
According to the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office, a 17-year-old was hit in the mouth with the ax Monday afternoon.
The teen told authorities that 39-year-old Patrick Gatlin was arguing with his stepmother when he tried to intervene.
The teen said Gatlin started punching him in the face before hitting him with the ax, according to the sheriff’s office.
Authorities said Gatlin ran away after the altercation. A warrant has been issued for his arrest.
According to officials, the 17-year-old refused medical treatment for his injuries.
