M&S, Tesco, Morrisons, and Asda sent their festive sandwiches over to the the Express for a rigorous taste test.

Out of all the supermarkets, only two managed to snag the top score a perfect five out of five for their Christmas sandwich creations, while another was left with the lowest score on the board.

One supermarket, in particular, scored dismally low across all its festive sandwich range. Kicking off with Asda, their standout Christmas sandwich which earned an impressive 4.5 out of five stars was the Cracking Christmas Club sandwich, priced at £3.35.

Packed within layers of granary bread, including a white slice in the middle, were slices of mature Cheddar cheese, bacon, chicken, cranberry chutney, and onion stuffing.

Upon tasting the sandwich, the reviewer couldn’t help but say: “That is good! ” And after taking another bite, she continued: “You know what, that’s really good.” The reviewer praised the chutney flavour but pointed out why it didn’t reach full marks: “Tone it down on the stuffing a little bit, and that will be wow.”

Another strong competitor was Asda’s Hog Roast sandwich, costing £3, which turned out to be “better” than the reviewer anticipated. Drenched in Bramley apple sauce, seasoned mayonnaise, and fried onions, the reviewer enjoyed how the sandwich “got the tastebuds going”, noting there was a “generous helping of meat”.

Despite usually preferring brown to white bread, they admitted that “soft white bread actually worked” quite well in this instance. The reviewer joked it could only be improved if the roast came off the BBQ, ultimately giving it a four out of five rating.

Other options, such as Asda’s Boxing Day Sandwich (£2.50) packed with chicken, ham, coleslaw and balsamic onion chutney didn’t receive the best feedback.

The Boxing Day Sandwich was given a mere two-out-of-five rating due to its “very strong” onion – not the ideal choice for those planning to stand under the mistletoe this Christmas. The reviewer lamented: “Very disappointing… but it’s only 385kl [calories] so it’s not bad.”

Just slightly better was Asda’s Let it Spice Curry Wrap (£3), described as “essentially a twist on a coronation chicken wrap”, which “had a good crunch”.

Top-rated Christmas sandwiches include Tesco’s Ho-Ho-Hog Wrap of pulled pork and apple slaw, M&S Pigs In Blanket Sandwich and M&S Surf and Turf Brioche Rolls – all earning five stars!

Perhaps due to sandwich fatigue, by the time Morrisons festive range was sampled, the reviews were less than stellar.

Morrisons The Best Slow Cooked Beef and Roast Potato sandwich wasn’t well-received, with several people expressing their dislike for the potato. “Stodgy potato,” one reviewer noted.

“Bit dry,” commented another. “I don’t like the potato in the sandwich.” However, another reviewer praised: “The flavours are really good.” This led another reviewer to admit: “The beef is nice.”

On average, Morrisons The Best Slow Cooked Beef and Roast Potato sandwich scored about three. As for the least popular festive offering, Morrison’s Pigs Under Blankets received just one star. “I don’t like it,” the reviewer simply said.

And some mischievous elves were up to their old tricks again nabbing the food without leaving a review for Tesco’s Festive Chicken and Bacon Wrap and Cracking Curry West Sausage and Onions.
