(Gray News) – The national average for a gallon of gas could dip below $3 for the first time since May 2021, according to AAA.

The national average for a gallon of gas on Wednesday was $3.06 and in 29 states, average gas prices are below $3 per gallon.

According to GasBuddy, the national average gas price is expected to drop to $2.98 per gallon the week of Thanksgiving, just in time for holiday travel where nearly 71.7 million people are expected to be on the roads.

“Americans are eager to get back on the road and visit loved ones this Thanksgiving, with the vast majority choosing the flexibility and convenience of driving, as gas prices have fallen below $3 in over half of the nation’s states,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy.

Last Thanksgiving Day, the national average for a gallon of gas was $3.26.

“Gas prices are much lower than they were this time last year. And we could be seeing a national average around Thanksgiving that’s below $3 a gallon, which we haven’t seen since 2021,” AAA spokesperson Aixa Diaz said.

Inrix, a provider of transportation and data insights, said Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon will be the worst times to travel by car. The best time to hit the road will be on Thanksgiving Day.
