People from across North Ayrshire gathered on Remembrance Sunday to pay tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice in various wars and people who continue to serve the Armed Forces.

Depute Provost John Sweeney attended the parade and service in Irvine.

The Irvine parade assembled in High Street, led by Irvine Pipe Band. It then arrived at the war memorial for a service led by David Whitelaw and made its way to Irvine Old Parish Church, where a service was held.

People attending the service heard from preacher, Rev Alec Wark that in the 70s interest in the First and Second World War appeared to be dipping as the conflicts seemed quite long ago.

Provost Anthea Dickson, who paid her respects in Largs, said: “Every year, people from towns and villages across North Ayrshire stand together to acknowledge the sacrifices that have been made – and are still being made – by those men and women in our Armed Forces.”

On Armistice Day, Monday, November 11, at 11am there was a service and two minutes’ silence at Watson Memorial Garden, off Burns Street, Irvine.

Provost Dickson, other elected members and chief officers attended, and the service was led by Father Mark Kelly from St Mary’s Parish Church.

Pupils at Irvine Royal and Greenwood Academy also showed their support for veterans who gave their all in conflicts around the globe.

They attended the Remembrance Day ceremony in Irvine to show their understanding of the sacrifices made.

North Ayrshire Provost Anthea Dickson added: “The attendance at Largs on a grey, dreich morning was impressive for the parade from Crawford Street to the War Memorial. There was a large variety of groups represented and as the crowd assembled at the war memorial, the clouds parted, blue sky appeared and the sun shone through.

“Highland Cathedral sounded beautiful prior to the service and there was a two minute silence, and all the groups represented paid their respects and placed their wreaths at the memorial.

“The attendees the marched to the New Largs Parish Church where Rev Graham McWilliams led the service of remembrance. A very touching morning of remembrance with many young people playing an active part, aware of the price of war.”
