BLUEFIELD, Va. – The Virginia Department of Transportation is offering safety tips and information for people who may be traveling for Thanksgiving.
VDOT said many highway work zones will be suspended and lane closures will be lifted on interstates and other major roads from Wednesday, Nov. 27 until Monday, Dec. 2.
People are also advised that the Thanksgiving holiday historically sees heavy congestion on roads as people go to and from their destinations. VDOT says people can use their 511 website to keep track of accidents, congestion, and more.
VDOT also gave safety tips for drivers:
- Buckle up and make sure passengers and car seats are secured
- If you plan to drink, have a designated driver, use public transportation, or make plans for ridesharing
- Be patient and follow speed limits
- Watch for deer and stay extra alert when near areas where wildlife frequent
- Put the phone down, and don’t drive distracted
- If you get tired, take a break at a rest area
- Obey the “Move Over” law
The “Move Over” law requires drivers and motorists to move over one lane, if possible, for all vehicles with flashing lights, flares or warning signs stopped on the side of the road.
