A new study has named high-flying Aberdeen as the deadliest team in Europe when it comes to punishing the opposition.

Jimmy Thelin‘s Granite City revolution has experienced blowback from expected goal, XG as the kids call it, savants who reckon the Dons’ unbeaten run is poised to end. But a differing view sees the Super Swede’s side are goal-mad assassins – who punish the rivals at a higher level than 320 other teams studied across Europe.

And the astonishing facts, worked out by the revered SpilXperten stats machine Benjamin Leander, judges teams on how they perform in the ‘danger zone’, the area viewed as the most likely to find the back of the net. And Thelin’s side utterly thrive, their goal return of 21 goals from 62 attempts is good for a return of 33.9 per cent – the only team in Europe who clear the 30 per cent threshold.

Thelin, searingly honest after Celtic battered them 6-0 in the Premier Sports Cup semi final, admits his troops have ways to go, however, their knack to win at an unprecedented rate against the rest of the Premiership means they cannot be discounted in continuing their dream season.

Aberdeen fans will hope their knack for making big chances count will be in full view when they return to Premiership action against St Mirren in Paisley on Saturday. Here are the stats…
