PEMBROKE, Va. (WDBJ) – For the past month and a half, some Giles County and Pembroke residents have gotten things stolen from their vehicles in their driveways or have caught unwanted visitors on their property.

This typically happens in the early hours of the morning between 2 and 5 a.m.

Giles County Deputy Scott Moye says the Sheriff’s Office is actively investigating several cases of this criminal activity and urging people to lock their car doors at night and remove valuables.

“I believe it’s a crime of opportunity. You’ve got folks that are on foot, that are walking around and whatever’s convenient to them or within reach, they’ll try a door to see if they can get in,” said Moye.

The Pembroke Police Department is also working to catch these trespassers.

On top of locking doors, Moye says one of the best ways to avoid this happening to you is to invest in a camera or leave a light on at night.

“A lot of the folks that are doing these types of crimes, you can look at them looking to see if there are cameras around. Also, criminals don’t like light, so if you have motion detection lights, those are things that usually dissuade them form coming onto your property,” said Moye.

The Sheriff’s Office and Pembroke Police have put in extra hours to increase patrolling through neighborhoods and say they will continue to do so.

It’s also important to remember that no matter how small an amount, item taken or even a person who looks suspicious, you should still report it to the local police department or the sheriff’s office.
