It’s common knowledge that fish is among the healthiest foods you can eat – often high in protein and filled with omega-3 fatty acids and vitamins. However, there’s reportedly one fish that outshines the rest in terms of its nutritional benefits.
This swimmer has been dubbed the king of all fish when it comes to health, according to the BBC’s list of world’s most nutritious foods. Ocean perch scored a whopping 89 out of 100, coming in at number three on a list of the most nutritious foods you can eat, reports Surrey Live.
100g of the fish has just 79 calories but around 20g of protein, according to Facts.net. The deep-water fish is best known as rockfish and is low in saturated fats. And it doesn’t stop there – the fish is an excellent source of:
- Vitamin B12, crucial for nerve health and red blood cell production
- Vitamin D, aiding calcium absorption and bone health
- Selenium, a powerful antioxidant
- Phosphorus, promoting healthy bones and energy metabolism
Other popular fish that are known for their health benefits include salmon, which is lauded for its omega-3 fatty acid, which is vital as the body is unable to produce it on its own. Another food that will keep you healthy is an ‘under-appreciated’ green that researchers have hailed as the “healthiest vegetable on Earth”.
Watercress has rightly earned this title after researchers found it to have a very high concentration of vitamins and minerals. In fact, the Centre for Diseases and Control assigns nutrition density scores to assess the vitamin and mineral content.
While well-known healthy vegetables like spinach, chard, and beet greens score in the 80s, watercress is the only one to achieve a perfect score of 100. Jennifer Di Noia, an associate professor of sociology at William Paterson University in Wayne, New Jersey, clarified: “Higher-ranking foods provide more nutrients per calories.”
