Reports have claimed that insiders have finally disclosed what the late Queen Elizabeth truly thought of Meghan Markle after she met Prince Harry.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex began their relationship in 2016, and it wasn’t long before the former Suits actress met her future husband’s royal family, including the late Queen.
The couple shared details about Meghan’s first meeting with the late monarch in their explosive Netflix documentary, Harry & Meghan. This memorable moment occurred at Royal Lodge in October 2016, just a year before the couple became engaged, reports the Express.
Meghan said: “There wasn’t like some big moment of, ‘now you’re going to meet my grandmother’. I didn’t know I was going to meet her until moments before. We were in the car and we were going to Royal Lodge for lunch, and he’s like, ‘Oh, my grandmother’s here, we’re going to meet her after church’. And I remember we were in the car driving up and he’s like, ‘You know how to curtsy, right?’ And I just thought it was a joke.”
Richard Eden of the Mail has reported that courtiers claimed Queen Elizabeth found Meghan to be a “breath of fresh air and a great asset” to the monarchy.
In his latest column, he wrote about how the late monarch warmly welcomed Prince Harry’s wife into the family, with an “unprecedented and highly personal gesture” after inviting her to join the royals at Sandringham for Christmas in 2017, just months before their wedding.
This was unusual, as only people who were married into the Royal Family were usually welcomed to join the Firm on Christmas.
That same year, the late Queen also mentioned “new members” of the family in her Christmas broadcast, a remark widely believed to be a reference to Meghan.
However, as the couple’s wedding in 2018 approached, The Queen reportedly began to have concerns about Meghan’s behaviour and attitude, according to the outlet.
The late monarch was reportedly surprised when Meghan rejected her suggestion that Duchess Sophie guide her on marrying into the Royal Family. She was also “taken aback” by Meghan’s choice of bridal gown, as well as her attitude toward the tiara.
The Mail claims that staff believed the duchess “may not have wanted to make a success of her life in Britain” when she began her royal duties and seemed to be “actively seeking reasons to be unhappy or resentful”.
Harry and Meghan’s relationship with the family continued to worsen, until they quit the Firm in 2020 and moved to California.
The late Queen was believed to be particularly “upset” by the couple’s explosive claims against the royals during their bombshell Oprah Winfrey interview.

In his memoir Spare, released in January 2023, months after Elizabeth’s passing, Harry wrote about his grandmother: “I’ll always support my Queen, my Commander in Chief, my Granny. Even after she’s gone.
“My problem has never been with the monarchy, nor the concept of monarchy. It’s been with the press and the sick relationship that’s evolved between it and the Palace.
“I love my Mother Country, and I love my family, and I always will. I just wish, at the second-darkest moment of my life, they’d both been there for me. And I believe they’ll look back one day and wish they had too.”
