NEW YORK (Gray News) – The judge overseeing President-elect Donald Trump’s hush money case has delayed his sentencing “indefinitely.”
According to several reports, Judge Juan Merchan ruled on Friday to postpone the sentencing, which was originally scheduled to take place next week.
The sentencing was postponed in order to allow time for more filings from both Trump’s defense team and prosecutors.
The filings will further expand both team’s ideas of how the case should proceed in light of Trump’s return to the presidency.
Merchan granted a request from Trump’s team to file a motion to dismiss the case, according to CNN. They have until Dec. 2 to submit their papers and prosecutors are ordered to respond by Dec. 9.
Trump’s lawyers said the case should be dismissed outright since it would interfere with his presidential obligations.
While prosecutors have said they’re open to putting the case on hold, possibly for the duration of Trump’s term, they do not want the case dismissed.
Trump was convicted in May of falsifying business records to hide a chain of payments that provided $130,00 to porn star Stormy Daniels.
According to the Associated Press, the payout was meant to keep her quiet about a sexual encounter she says she had with Trump. Trump denies her claims.
