MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Va. (WDBJ) – Two planes flying low across the New River Valley have been causing quite the stir.
They showed up about a week ago, easily recognizable by the green lights coming from them.
Theories about the planes are as widespread as the ground they are covering. People have said everything from Google maps to food delivery drones and even aliens.
They have been spotted all over the New River in Radford, Fries, Montgomery, Giles and Pulaski counties.
From law enforcement and fire departments, county officials and even Virginia Tech, no one seemed to have the answer.
Some even wondered if the planes might be looking for crates of chemicals that were washed away from the Radford Army Ammunition Plant, but a plant spokesperson says that is not the case.
Thursday, a pilot at the Montgomery Executive Airport said he’s flying one of the planes.
He said they are mapping the bottom of the New River, but adds he could not disclose why or for who, so it seems the mystery will live on at least a little longer.
