Keeping your home cosy during the winter months can be a challenge, but it’s crucial for comfortable living.
As the cost of living crisis continues to impact electricity and gas prices, a social media user has revealed some lesser-known tips that could help retain warmth in your home.
It might seem difficult to keep your house warm during the chilly season, but with these handy hints, it should become much easier. Home hacks and cleaning guru Tanya Mukendi, also known as @tanyahomeinspo on TikTok, has shared her secrets for keeping her property toasty during the winter using a few clever tricks you might not be aware of.

While some may already know the importance of keeping radiators clear, Tanya explains why it’s particularly crucial during the colder months. She said: “Keeping your radiators clear allows heat to circulate effectively. However, if you have limited space then make sure to keep your furniture a few inches apart.”
Another of Tanya’s tips is to control the heat with radiator valves. By lowering the temperature, she suggests you can save energy and consequently cut down on heating costs. She believes this method can “significantly reduce energy consumption.”
For those wanting to monitor their energy usage or set a specific temperature, most modern thermostats can be programmed. Tanya added: “You’ll be surprised by how many people forget to program their thermostat properly. Get that manual out so you don’t waste energy when you’re not even at home.”
One handy tip that people may have overlooked is a simple method to retain heat within your home. On newer builds or windows, there might be air vents at the top which are designed to allow air circulation even when windows are closed.
Ensuring these are shut during the winter months can make a significant difference, as can laying a rug on wooden flooring which struggles to hold heat independently. “Simply laying a rug can increase the temperature,” says Tanya.
Doubling up curtains or even installing heavier ones is also an effective way to prevent heat from escaping your home as it can “reduce heat loss by around 40%” according to the home improvement expert. There are more affordable methods of staying warm during winter too, including using a hot water bottle under a blanket to “keep you snug on your sofa”.
