WASHINGTON (Gray DC) – President-elect Donald Trump has chosen a new nominee for Attorney General after former Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) withdrew his name from consideration.
Trump has picked Pam Bondi, a longtime ally of his who was the first woman to serve as Florida’s attorney general.
In a statement, Trump said, “For too long, the partisan Department of Justice has been weaponized against me and other Republicans – Not anymore. Pam will refocus the DOJ to its intended purpose of fighting Crime, and Making America Safe Again. I have known Pam for many years — She is smart and tough, and is an AMERICA FIRST Fighter, who will do a terrific job as Attorney General!”
Bondi previously represented Trump during his first impeachment trial in which the House impeached him for withholding military aid from Ukraine. Trump was ultimately acquitted by the Senate.
Bondi has also served as the chair of the think tank, America First Policy Institute.
She will need to be confirmed by a majority of the Republican-led Senate once Trump takes office next year.
