Former Celtic striker Vakoun Bayo put Watford 1-0 up away to Plymouth. But his own fans didn’t even realise he’d scored.
The Hornets visited Home Park to take on Wayne Rooney‘s Pilgrims in the Friday night Championship clash. And the visitors struck after just nine minutes, with ex-Hoops flop Bayo sliding in at the back post to turn home a cross with the ball hitting Plymouth keeper Daniel Grimshaw on the way in.
But while Bayo and his teammates celebrated taking an early lead, the travelling support didn’t react, meaning an eerie silence greeted the goal. A full six seconds elapsed before the away end realised what had happened before bizarrely reacting en masse to the opener. Sky Sports co-commentator Don Goodman is a veteran of English second tier games, but couldn’t recall anything quite like it. He said: “Well, that is one of the strangest reactions to a goal I’ve ever seen from an away section. They had no idea where the ball had gone.”
Plymouth drew level through Andre Gray in 23 minutes. But Watford re-established their lead just four minutes before the break as Scotland star Ryan Porteous arrived right on cue to finish from the second phase of a set play.
And there was no confusion after that one as the Watford fans were in no doubt the former Hibs man had found the net. A win sees Watford move up to fourth in the table, well in the playoff mix.
