Brutally honest Chris Sutton slammed Rangers for their “pathetic” draw with Dundee United after Celtic extended their lead at the summit.
But fellow pundit Robbie Savage attempted to leap to the defence of under-fire Philippe Clement as he hyped up the visitors to Ibrox and their placing in the Scottish Premiership. The draw against United blew Rangers’ perfect home record in the league with the boos ringing out from the stands after fuming fans watched their side drop points for the fifth time in 12 games.
While Aberdeen suffered defeat against St Mirren, Brendan Rodgers’ side remained unbeaten and extended their lead over Rangers to 11 points with a win over Hearts while moving three clear of the Dons. Speaking on BBC’s 606, Celtic hero Sutton said: “We are not even in December – 11 points behind Celtic. It looked to me like a lot of the Rangers fans could not be bothered to go and watch their team. It was a pathetic draw against Dundee United yesterday for Rangers. Is it time up for Philippe Clement?”
Savage attempted to cut it with a defence of Rangers: “What do you mean a pathetic draw? Are Dundee United not very good? Are they bottom? They are fourth – it’s third vs fourth.”
It’s not exactly the case that the Ibrox diehards will have been hoping to hear from the Welshman – that they slipped up against one of their rivals in the race for third spot. Sutton concluded: “Rangers fans expect better. It was a poor performance once again.”
