A heroic brother and sister rescued a woman after a fire engulfed a house in a Scots village.
Emergency crews were alerted to the incident at Main Street in Holytown, Lanarkshire, at around 7:28pm last night, Saturday, November 23. An elderly woman was transported to hospital and is believed to be suffering from shock.
The woman was rescued by siblings Donna Magee, 36, and Scott Cummings, 47, after they noticed smoke coming from the building.
Speaking to the Record, Donna explained: “My brother was taking me to a garage in Holytown to pick up my car when he noticed smoke coming from the house and pulled over at the side of the road in his van.
“We didn’t think much and just ran over to help. Scott was asking if anyone was inside but they weren’t sure so I ran around the back door and shouted inside.
“I heard someone screaming so my brother and another man helped me to force the door open but the flames and smoke were really bad at this point.
“We managed to get it open and dragged this little old lady outside and sat her in a car until the ambulance arrived.
“Her family have reached out and told me she is still in hospital suffering from shock but is doing well. However, the family cat is missing and everyone is desperate to find it.”
A Scottish Fire and Rescue spokesperson said: “We were called to a house fire at Main Street in Holytown last night, Saturday, November 23 at around 7.28pm.
“We sent out three appliances to tackle the blaze and it was extinguished at around 10pm. One casualty was taken to hospital.”
