(Gray News) – Professional golfer Brian Harman revealed that a close family friend has been in a coma for weeks after trying to save his 6-year-old son from drowning.
On Oct. 13, Harman was competing in a tournament in China when his wife and kids, along with family friend Cathy Dowdy took a trip to Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.
His 6-year-old son was boogie boarding in the ocean when a rip current pulled him out to sea, Harman told PGA Golf.
“She went in the water after my son,” said Harman. “She’s been in a coma for going on six weeks now and so obviously our world down here was kind of turned on its head.”
Another person, Crane Cantrell, also ran to help Harman’s son, who was boogie boarding at the time and was uninjured.
According to officials, a lifeguard reached Dowdy and brought her to shore, where he performed CPR.
Dowdy was taken to a hospital where she currently remains on life support.
In a GoFundMe update on Monday, Dowdy’s husband, Mike, shared that her recovery has been “a roller-coaster ride.”
“She is still unconscious and still having some neuro storms,” he wrote. “This causes a roller coaster ride with blood pressure and breathing rate. Please pray for calmer days ahead.”
In the most recent update, her daughter, Terri Langford said doctors are starting to wean Dowdy off the ventilator.
“She did 6 hours Thursday, about the same Friday and has been doing it an hour so far today with no issues, Langford said. “Please keep her in your prayers!”
So far, the family has raised over $90,000.
