AUSTIN, Texas — Staring in March, Austinites flying out for a tropical vacation in Hawaii will have to deal with a connecting flight.
The Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) recently announced that with Hawaiian Airlines’ exit from the market, nonstop service from Austin to Honolulu will end next spring.
The airport welcomed Hawaiian Airlines to Texas in 2021 and said it has been “proud to support” the nonstop route to Honolulu in the years since. The service will remain until March; after that, travelers will need to choose connecting flights from one of AUS’s five domestic airlines that service Honolulu.
The airport said Hawaiian Airlines will be in contact with any customers scheduled to fly from Austin to Honolulu after March.
AUS said its leadership “remains committed to partnering with airlines to attract new nonstop services for our travelers and community.”
Earlier this year, the U.S. Transportation Department gave the green light to Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines to close their $1 billion merger after the carriers agreed to certain conditions, including maintaining current service on routes between Hawaii and the mainland U.S. where they don’t have much competition.
