A body which was discovered on a Scots island has been formally identified as Shanahan MacInnes.

Shanahan, from the Isle of Benbecula, was reported missing after vanishing in the Tindill Road area of Balivanich at around 1.30am on Friday, November 22. Police said they were extremely concerned for the 28-year-old and launched a frantic search.

On Sunday, police confirmed a body had been discovered in the Aird area on the island, which is in the Outer Hebrides. Sadly, officers have now confirmed that it has been formally identified as Shanahan. The death is not being treated as suspicious.

Her devastated family have since released a statement on social media, paying tribute to their “beautiful darling Shanahan”. Writing on Facebook, they said: “We as a family are absolutely heartbroken and devastated with the news we have received today.

“Shanahan’s passing was an extremely tragic accident. It was nobody’s fault. We are extremely upset…We would appreciate if we could all be left to grieve our beautiful darling Shanahan.”

Meanwhile Shanahan’s workplace, The Shore Room Hair and Beauty, announced that “due to the current circumstances”, the salon would close until further notice. They wrote: “We appreciate all the love and support we have received at this time.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “The body of a woman found in the Aird area of Benbecula on Sunday, November 24, 2024, has been formally identified as 28-year-old Shanahan MacInnes. The death is not being treated as suspicious and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.”
