Rangers have announced Patrick Stewart as their new chief executive with the former Manchester United supremo taking up his role next month.
It finally ends the club’s search for James Bisgrove‘s successor – SIX months after he left for the Saudi Pro League. Aberdeen-born Stewart most recently worked for English Premier League giants Manchester United where he spent almost two decades and had a stint as interim chief executive.
But now he will take on the role at Ibrox on a permanent basis as the Ibrox side look to restructure off the park, with Greenock-born Tory Peer Malcolm Offord expected to be named chairman. The Glasgow University graduate and former lawyer will officially start his new role on December 16, the day after Rangers take on Celtic in the Premier Sports Cup final.
And he is jumping straight into the job at the deep end as he has to deal with the mounting pressure over boss Philippe Clement with the team sitting third in the Scottish Premiership and trailing their Old Firm rivals by 11 points.
Interim chairman John Gilligan said: “On behalf of the board, I’m delighted to welcome Patrick to the club as CEO. Patrick comes with an excellent reputation and background, bringing extensive experience of operating at senior levels during his 20-plus years in football.
“The board continues in discussions with several excellent candidates for the role of chairperson and expect to make an announcement of an appointment in the coming weeks.”
