BLUEFIELD, W.Va. – Bluefield is moving forward with plans to construct a centralized campus for the city’s first-responders.

City Board members approved almost $100,000 Tuesday for an architectural and engineering study on such a facility, with the study also helping find a location that is more centralized.

The current building on Bluefield Avenue houses the City Hall, Police Department and the Fire Department with Bluefield Rescue Squad in a smaller building beside Mitchell Stadium on Stadium Drive, forcing first-responders to deal with heavy traffic when games are being played.

City Manager Cecil Marson said the current situation does not provide enough space for personnel and equipment.

A new campus for all first-responders would provide the space needed as well as, hopefully, a more centralized location if the right site can be pinpointed.

This initial study will provide more concrete plans and when they are in place, the city will seek federal funding to help construct what is needed for the first-responder campus
