Limescale is a common issue in kettles, especially for those living in hard water areas. One minute, your kettle seems fine; the next, your coffee has an unpleasant mix of sliminess and flakes.
But dealing with limescale doesn’t have to be a hassle.
Fans of cleaning icon Mrs Hinch claim it can be removed in just “seconds” with a natural cleaner – and it’s neither baking soda nor white vinegar, reports the Express.
On the Mrs Hinch Army Cleaning Tips Facebook page, one woman asked for advice on how to descale her kettle.
Christy Whitton posted: “Morning! My husband says we need a new kettle, I say it just needs a clean!” She also posted two images showing the brownish limescale at the bottom of her kettle, to support her case.
The consensus among commenters was clear: if baking soda and white vinegar don’t work, you should try citric acid.
Helen Crickmore advised: “Citric acid. Half-fill your kettle and bring to a boil, add two tablespoons of citric acid and leave for a few seconds, empty and rinse. Fill and boil once and empty and you are good to go.”
Echoing this, Ann Marie remarked: “Citric acid works really well, so much better than white vinegar and baking soda.”
Dawn Cooper mentioned her struggles with limescale, explaining: “I live in a hard water area and my kettle always gets coated in really tough limescale.”
She then shared her go-to solution, saying: “I use a couple of tablespoons of citric acid mixed with a mug of water, boil it in the kettle, let it cool, and keep swirling it around occasionally. You’ll be amazed!”
Another contributor, Lorraine Andrews, confirmed the effectiveness of this method, writing: “Citric acid makes it vanish after 30 seconds and no scrubbing is required.”

After considering the suggestions, Christy decided to try the citric acid method on her kettle, achieving impressive results.
Christy shared a photo of her sparkling, descaled kettle and expressed her gratitude: “Thank you guys! The citric acid worked a treat. My kettle is like new.”
