The family of an 18-year-old British teenager detained in Dubai over a holiday romance with a 17-year-old girl has described their efforts to secure his release as a harrowing “emotional battle”.
Marcus Fakana’s parents have made a heartfelt appeal to HH Sheikh Mohammed Al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai, to allow their son to return home. Marcus was arrested after being accused of having a sexual relationship with the girl, who is also British, during a family holiday in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
He is currently awaiting trial, set to begin next month. In a recent statement, his family expressed their anguish: “We are praying for the day we can reunite with Marcus.”
His parents, from Tottenham in north London, revealed they have sought help from Foreign Secretary David Lammy, urging him to ensure Marcus’s rights are protected. They also appealed directly to Sheikh Mohammed, reports the Mirror, saying: “This ordeal has taken a terrible toll on us, both emotionally and financially. Every day feels like an uphill battle.”
The family expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support they’ve received from the public, media, and loved ones, which they said has provided a glimmer of hope during this challenging time.
Marcus could face a prison sentence of up to 20 years under UAE law. The incident came to light when the girl’s mother, angered upon discovering their relationship, reported Marcus to Dubai police after returning to the UK. While their relationship would have been legal in the UK, UAE law classifies a 17-year-old as a minor. The girl has since turned 18.
The pair reportedly met while staying at the same hotel with their families and had spent time together discreetly, as the girl was afraid to inform her mother about their relationship. The girl’s mother allegedly discovered their chats and photos on her daughter’s phone and forwarded the evidence to Dubai police.
Marcus was initially detained at Al Barsha Police Station, described by some as “notorious,” following the complaint. Since then, more than £24,000 has been raised to fund his legal defense through a legitimate GoFundMe campaign, though the family has warned about a fraudulent fundraiser circulating online.
In their fundraising appeal, Marcus’s family described their anguish: “What was meant to be a joyful holiday has turned into a nightmare for Marcus, our family, and our friends. He is being charged with a crime that could result in up to 20 years in prison. He is only 18 years old, frightened, and struggling with his mental health.”
The family continues to fight for Marcus’s release, urging the authorities to show compassion and allow him to return home.
