BLUEFIELD, W.Va. –
The turkeys are officially out of the oven as Bluefield Union Mission is preparing that Thanksgiving meal.
“We’ll be distributing the food bags and the turkeys, so people can go home the following day and have Thanksgiving,” says Craig Hammond, Executive Director of Bluefield Union Mission.
Now in its 93rd year, the organization will also dish out meals on the Thanksgiving holiday.
“But we’re also getting, as you can see, cooking turkeys, because on Thanksgiving Day, we’ll have a hot meal with all the trimmings.”
Hammond calls this his favorite time of year.
“Well I love the time with the volunteers and we all get together, it’s a time to give. I think Thanksgiving is probably my favorite holiday. It’s kind of sandwiched in between Halloween and Christmas, but it’s a wonderful time of the year when we just give thanks, and thankful people are happy people.”
Hammond also says the Union Mission may have extra meals day-of.
“If [you] have some spare time or if you’re in need, come on down. This is the place where everybody comes together and shows our gratitude.
