Television icon Lorraine Kelly experienced some candid feedback from her husband, Steve Smith, in the middle of her morning show on Wednesday (November 27).
The broadcast was progressing without a hitch until Lorraine, aged 64, had to briefly pause the program after her cameraman husband alerted her to an on-air error.
He told the broadcaster via a text message about a mistake she had made during a segment on wildlife photography, and she promptly addressed the mix-up. Cutting into her show, Lorraine announced to her viewers: “News just in! My husband has given me a text and said ‘that was just a badger, it wasn’t a honey badger.”
Amusedly glancing at her phone, she quipped, “Ok, fine. Moving on!”.
Lorraine and Steve initially connected in the 80s and just celebrated their 32nd year of marriage, reports the Mirror. Reflecting on their early days during a conversation with Woman and Home magazine, Lorraine recalled meeting Steve at the TV-am office, where she worked as a reporter and he was a member of the crew.
Realising that Steve was “the one,” she befriended him, and it was she who made the first romantic move. Their relationship blossomed from there.
The duo wed on September 5, 1992, at Mains Castle in Dundee and welcomed their daughter Rosie two years thereafter. While Lorraine remains a public persona, Steve opts for a life away from media attention. The beloved presenter once revealed, “His idea of hell on earth would be at something like a premiere.”
“It would be like having needles stuck in his eyes. That does help. It must be very odd being with someone who enjoys walking down a red carpet.”
In a sincere conversation with The Mirror back in 2021, Lorraine Kelly shared details about the steadfast support from her husband Steve. “He picks up the slack and always has. I couldn’t do what I do if it weren’t for him. He makes me laugh an awful lot. He’s very kind and a brilliant dad.”
Their daughter, Rosie, has flown the nest to set up her own life in London with her fiancé, Steve White, and their little one, Billie.
Regardless of the miles between them, Lorraine and Steve, elated grandparents, ensure they regularly visit their daughter and granddaughter from their Buckinghamshire residence. Relocating from Dundee in 2017, the couple has comfortably nested in a sumptuous £2 million house boasting a guest cottage and a bright conservatory leading out to a sprawling garden with a river nearby.
Lorraine often celebrates Steve’s cooking talent, recently treating her fans to a glimpse of his culinary creativity: a pie dedicated to her. Sharing it on Instagram, she wrote: “Nothing says I LOVE YOU like a homemade steak pie made by my husband and dedicated to @dundeeunitedfc! It was utterly delicious. #pie #homecooking #love.”
Lorraine airs weekdays at 9am on ITV1
