Rescue crews evacuated passenger from at least one stranded subway train Wednesday afternoon after a watermain break on the Upper West Side brought service in the MTA B and C subway trains to a halt and severely curtailed service on both the A and D lines.
Officials said no injuries were reported, but firefighters were dispatched to subway tracks below Central Park West just a few blocks south of the W. 103rd Street station to help evacuate a stranded C train, an FDNY spokesperson told the Daily News.
A break in a city water main somewhere near W. 103rd St. and Central Park West was first reported around 1:39 p.m., sources told The News, flooding a portion of the line. It was not immediately clear if water had reached the third rail.
Service on the B and C trains was suspended in both directions Wednesday afternoon as crews worked to control the flood. Service on the A and D lines was also significantly disrupted, with each line split into two sections.
A trains were running between Inwood-207 St. and 125 St. in northern Manhattan and between Far Rockaway in Queens and Chambers Street in Lower Manhattan. The A was making all local stops in Brooklyn.
The D train was similarly split in two, operating between Norwood-205 St. and 161 St.-Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, and between Coney Island and 34th St. – Herald Square.
Some A trains were operating on the F and Q lines as well.
Straphangers needing to travel through Manhattan’s Upper West Side were advised to take the No. 2 or 3 trains.
