As the festive season approaches, celebrations across Scotland are in full swing. To encourage mindful enjoyment, the Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) continues its impactful ‘Made to Be Measured’ campaign, a reminder for everyone to savour Scotland’s national drink responsibly and be mindful of the Chief Medical Officers’ (CMO) guidelines.

A campaign Made to Measure

Christmas can be a time of overindulgence, but the Made to Be Measured campaign is all about the importance of measuring drinks at home and understanding the alcohol content in your favourite tipple. For example:

  • 25ml of whisky (40% ABV) = 1 unit

  • 175ml glass of wine (12% ABV) = 2.1 units

  • 1 pint of lager (4.5% ABV) = 2.6 units

By making informed choices, we can all keep track of our alcohol intake and enjoy a more balanced festive season.

A tradition to savour in moderation

Scotch whisky is a celebrated part of Scottish heritage, crafted with care and matured over years. This festive season, SWA encourages us to honour this tradition by savouring a dram responsibly.

Mark Kent, CEO of the SWA, explains: “Christmas is a time for a bit of indulgence, when we can spend time with friends and family and enjoy ourselves. But that indulgence shouldn’t mean excessive alcohol consumption.

“It is important to make responsible choices about alcohol consumption and keep track of how many units of alcohol we are consuming.

“The Made to be Measured campaign will continue to inform people across Scotland in the lead up to Christmas about the Chief Medical Officer guidelines and encourage them to track what they drink, particularly when consuming alcohol at home.

“We know that it’s easy for people who don’t measure their drinks to underestimate the number of units they are actually consuming – which is why it is so important that consumers always measure their Scotch whisky.

“So, over the festive period our message is simple: savour your Scotch, it is made to be measured.”

Your holiday checklist: Measure and enjoy

So, whether you’re raising a glass of whisky with loved ones or pouring a festive tipple at home, remember: moderation is key. By using a jigger with a mindful approach, you can savour the season while keeping within recommended limits.

This festive period, the SWA invites everyone to make responsible choices, measure their drinks, and truly enjoy Scotland’s most iconic drink – responsibly.
